Nashville screened Soil image!
Nashville Screened Soil Image.

The above image shows the loose and easy to work nature of soil that has been screened or sifted.

The above photo is a dump truck of screened soil being dumped at a clients home. Screened Soil / Sifted Soil is free of large chunks, branches, and roots. You will pay more for soil that has been processed this way but it will save you lots of time in labor.
The soil in the above image was spread over the clients yard to prepare for sodding. A typical dumptruck load of soil is between 12 and 16 yards. You can determine how much soil you need by measuring the width of the area and multiplying it by the length of the area. Then you multiply that total by the depth in decimals ( percentage of a foot ex 6" = .50 ) to get your total cubic footage. Divide this total by 27 to get how many cu yds you need.
Side note:
27 cu ft = 1 yard. Happy measuring!

Some garden soils have too many small rocks to make for easy planting and digging. Screen the soil through a home-made screening frame to separate out the rocks (and twigs and other yard debris) before you begin working or planting the soil. Soil screens are easy to make, and you can customize them to your purposes.
